[ Dorian places the candles on top of the cake, putting in all six that were in the package. As he flicks the lighter to try and light it, he can't help but smile, looking over at Anita. ]

I don't remember if you picked a day for yourself or not but honestly, I probably forgot it. Happy birthday, Anita.

[ As the lighter sprung to life, Dorian started to light the candles ]

[A lump rises in her throat as she watches Dorian top the cake with the candles. She is speechless, too touched and too grateful to say anything at first. There was a cake, and it looked great, and Dorian was wishing her a happy birthday. Who cares if he forgot and who cares if it wasn't December 25? Normally Anita doubts that it's just the thought that counts especially when you're already going hungry after your sisters spent all the money on books again and they think intellectual food will sustain anyone, but this time, she has no doubts.

Yes, the thought definitely counts. It counts a lot.]

That's...i-it's okay, I mean...

...Thanks. [She blinks several times.]

You're welcome, [ he responded, with a gentle smile, looking over at Anita. It was worth it. Just seeing that expression, seeing how touched she looked? Oh yeah, it was definitely worth it. ]

Like I said, we're doing this properly. [ So Dorian cleared his throat and, with the voice of a good singer who hasn't actually sung in a while, he started to sing ]

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Anita, happy birthday to you. [ and then he looked up at her, expectantly, waiting for her to blow out the candles. ]

[Anita grins weakly at first, swinging her legs while she sat on the sofa. Normally she would have dismissed the singing as corny and childish and would have rolled her eyes, but Dorian had a decent enough voice and he liked him too much to dissuade him. Instead, her grin gets progressively wider until a giggle escapes her.]

I didn't know you could sing. And...I really appreciate you doing this properly. [She leans forward and blows out the candles.]

[brushoff]

There are some things that you have to do properly. This is one of them, [ said with a grin. As she blew out the candles, Dorian started to cut pieces of the cake: not that many, just around four or so. ]

And as for my singing, I used to be in a band.

[acrobrat]

[She watches him eagerly, excitement shining in her eyes.]

Really? Did you give out autographs and stuff like that?

[brushoff]

Among other things. [ there was so much groupie sex, Anita. so much groupie sex. Thankfully, he's not telling her that, no siree bob ]

It was in the 1960s and we were a relatively small band though, so nothing as elaborate as the musicians of today.

[acrobrat]

That's pretty cool. [She means it.] So, can I make requests sometime?

[brushoff]

Obviously, [ said with a small laugh. ] Just name your tune.

[acrobrat]

Heh, thanks for the tip. [She stares eagerly at the cake now cut into pieces...]

[brushoff]

[ Putting a slice on a plate, he hands it over to Anita. ] There we go. Enjoy.

[acrobrat]

I will. Thanks! [Anita reaches out to take her slice carefully, and then proceeds to cut off a bit with her knife and fork.

She takes her first bite, and a smile quickly spreads across her face.]

Mmm, it's really good!

[brushoff]

I'll pass my compliments to the chef. [ Which was....the bakery department at whatever this world's version of Publix is. ]

What other flavors do they have?

[She wants to try them all if they're as good as the cake she's having now.]

[brushoff]

Vanilla, red velvet, coconut...probably carrot cake as well, though I didn't ask about that.

[acrobrat]

Wow, we should try 'em all!

[Hold your horses, Anita.]

[brushoff]

Let's see if they have sample sizes first, [ said with a small laugh. ]

[acrobrat]

No problem. [She shrugs as she continues eating.]

[brushoff]

[ Dorian takes a small bite of the cake for himself because hey, it's a bigass cake. ]

So, anything else I can do for you birthday?

[acrobrat]

[Anita twirls her fork thoughtfully, then shrugs with a short laugh.]

Having cake with a friend is more than enough. Thanks so much, Dorian. [She's not going to demand a gift from him. The cake probably counts.]

It's the least I can do, [ said with a smile on his face. ] After all, it's your special day.
