I'm trying to understand 'free will'. I thought he might. Or that you might understand it enough to explain it, since you have a deal with him.

To start with, my deal is purely transactional. I give something, I get something. Still, I can at least try to explain the concept of free will.

Why did you contract with that devil?

I wanted eternal youth and beauty. I never wanted to grow old.

And what did you pay for that?

I gave up my soul.

I thought so at the time. Things became...a bit complicated in the long run. But it's not like I was using my soul to begin with.

I suppose mine was just...being kind? Or simply cutting me a small deal.

I suppose he just wanted leverage. Due to the terms of my immortality, body parts and years off my life wouldn't matter. I'd still remain the same.

[ There's a pause before Dorian admits, ]

I made a second deal with him, though. For that one, the payment was other people.

Those are always nice. It definitely widens the opportunities when you can bargain with other people.

I had a deal like that with the Japanese prime minister.

I'll tell you the specifics of my deal if you tell me yours.

I don't mind telling you.

In exchange for working for the state-sanctioned devil hunters and arranging contracts for them, as well as not removing him from power or destroying anything, he allowed me the use of Japanese citizens to take any damage I might sustain and die in my stead if someone tried to kill me. I could also use prisoners for enforcement, if need be.

I made a choice that I thought I wanted at the time. When I discovered that the choice was...less than ideal, I was offered a second deal. All I had to do to regain my previous standing was kill three people.

As a warden, I should probably tell you that making deals might not get you closer to graduation. As Dorian Gray, I don't give a shit.

What sort of deals do you make?

Making deals is part of being a devil. If making deals won't see me graduated, then this whole thing is pointless.

And usually I give away part of my power for a price. It's hard to bargain around here, though, since so many options aren't allowed.

And of course, there's the matter of me not wanting your power in the first place. [ He shrugs before pointing out, ]

Part of my immortality means that I can heal from any wound I obtain. And I do mean any.

You don't even know what I offers. So you can hardly say that. But I'm not interested in offering to you anyway. You have a contract with a devil.

That can get messy.
