I try not to judge, unless someone's done something exceptionally stupid. I'd be a hypocrite if I judged people on their actions when I've inevitably done something worse myself.

But no, my problem with Daniel was that here is this memory, completely out of context, something that I didn't want him to see to begin with, and he decides that surely that must be representative of who I am as a whole.

[ the teasing is fairly gentle, lacking any kind of bite in his tone. ]

He seems the exact kind of sheltered son of some would-be Lord, who despite having traveled and been to university has very little life experience whatsoever.

That's precisely it, [ Dorian sighs. ] And, for all his holier-than-thou protestations, he's an inmate. Despite his convenient amnesia, he must have done something to get himself landed here.

Something terrible, if I'm any judge. The man is soaked in terror, and I suspect it's of himself. He knows, deep in the core of who and what he is, that he has done terrible things and he chooses not to look.

So I suspect that he grasps the perceived faults of others like a man with a life raft. If you have sinned, and sinned terribly, then he is less of a sinner.

[ Elias sounds amused. It's all a guess, of course. He doesn't Know for certain. ]

He latched onto my faults very quickly, [ Dorian points out. ] During our conversation, he was quick to cast aspersions and focus directly on me, even when I tried to shift it back to him.

I suspect you've got something there.

I always have something here, Dorian. One doesn't need to have eldritch powers of observation to be particularly perceptive.

But he's not worth your ire, surely.

He's worth my annoyance and irritation, not my ire. Very few people on this ship are more than mere irritants.

I'm glad to hear you say so. The scene you made on his post had me a tad concerned that he'd somehow done more.

The 'scene?' Elias, my dear, you know that I am an unrepentant drama queen. You should expect a scene no matter where I go!

There is drama for drama's sake, Dorian, and then there are genuinely hurt feelings. I don't claim to know you as well as some, but I thought I detected some real hurt in the vitriol you were throwing at our amnesiac acquaintance.

Really. You'd think I'd be hurt by a jumped-up judgmental little empath? I'm annoyed, not hurt.

[ There's a pause before Dorian none-too-subtlely changes the conversation. ]

Do you drink? I've got some scotch in my room that I've been saving for a rainy day.

I do drink. Even Scotch, when the occasion arises.

[ very subtle 10/10 ]

Level six, room twelve. I'll see you shortly.

[ It's only a few moments before there's a knock at the door. he hasn't had far to go and greets Dorian with the news when the door is opened to him ]

Dorian, you're aware I'm in number eight? We're neighbours.

[brushoff]

What, really?

[ He was absolutely unaware of that. ]

Hell, I'll have to invite you over for drinks more often. Follow me.

[ Dorian's room is part of a house—apparently, bringing an entire mansion onto the Barge is 'too much work' and 'a bit of a hassle' and 'you'll be fine with just a handful of rooms, Mr. Gray.' The main door opens out into a hallway with three doors in the hallway and a locked attic hatch in the ceiling. Dorian gestures for Elias to follow him to the open door, which leads to a kitchen/dining room sort of area. ]

Normally, my place is much bigger than this. But apparently, the Admiral frowns on attaching full mansions to the ship.

[ Elias knows where everyone's cabins are and almost everyone not sleeping in their own. But please, Dorian. Neighbours.

But he keeps that thought to himself, ready to play the part of the impressed guest. ]

Goodness. Who do I see about renovations? My one room is serviceable but hardly on par with all this.

[brushoff]

One of the perks of being a warden, [ Dorian grins. ] I get multiple rooms and a toilet.

[ When they're inside the kitchenette area, Dorian brings down two glasses and rummages through a cabinet in order to grab a bottle of scotch. The cabinet is obviously a liquor cabinet that's seen better days: there's only four or so bottles in there, compared to something that should be fully stocked. He sets out a bottle of scotch before closing the cabinet behind him and starting to pour. ]

I'm happy to share those bathroom privileges, by the way, if you ever want a nice long soak in the tub without having to deal with other inmates.

And miss the delight of communal bathing? Dorian, I practically live for it.

[ the sarcasm is heavy in his tone, unmissable. ]

There's little enough else to do here, when one isn't being judged over the slightest of indiscretions.

There really isn't much else to do, [ Dorian admits, with a little shrug. ] I've taken to reading, drinking, and sitting around, twiddling my thumbs. Wonderful hobbies, I know.

I hear crochet helps pass the time wonderfully.

[ Now there's an amusing mental picture. ]

I think I'll take up crossword puzzles instead, [ he teases. ] With crochet, people ask you to make things for them and honestly, I don't think I like people all that much.
