for zane! sure does suck to hang out in bright falls, huh
Well, it's probably not a rumor at all, is it. Because as night fell, Dorian felt something in the air shift. It felt...thicker, in a way? Which is a very weird thing to say about the fucking air, but it is what it is. It felt thicker, almost oppressive in a way that darkness rarely is. He thought about the London smog of the 1950s, those few days where the terrible air, the coal dust and soot, and the vehicle exhaust all bound together to create something toxic, something that choked in your throat and lungs. It was a thick, toxic, omnipresent darkness.
Yeah, Dorian is absolutely certain something's up now. The jury's out as to what it truly is.
He can be found standing outside of his shitty little motel room, television turned on solely for background noise, frowning as he looks at the encroaching darkness. This is...weird. Weird in a way where Dorian kind of wants to jump head-first into it. Weird in a way that hopefully won't kill him.
As he reaches for his cigarettes, he puts one in his mouth, then looks around for his box of matches. It's back inside the hotel room, but who knows. If there's anyone approaching, perhaps he can bum a light.

It was the best and worst of America. There still was so much space, plenty of towns barely hanging on, hardscrabble little places that were trying to make their move, the drive and determination and chutzpah that Dorian adored of the America in the past. America in the 1920s was great. A feisty nation, determined to prove itself on the world's stage, bright and brilliant and ready to take on the challenge.
But the Texas cities? The cities were horrible. Large, ugly things almost crushed under the weight of their own self-importance and overpasses. Forgotten centers where all residents fled to cookie-cutter nigh identical houses set in towns created solely for the purpose of commuting. People didn't thrive in places like that, with their subdivisions and big box stores and fucking Targets. You lived there, but you didn't thrive. And Dorian Gray was always looking for something new, something bright and breathing and alive.
Granted, a shitty little dive bar wasn't exactly what most people thought of when they thought of 'alive.' But Dorian had been lingering around Dallas long enough that a few things had gained his interest. The coming out of the closet, so to speak, of vampires had been the big one. Idly, he wondered what Toby would have thought of it all—he felt so alone for so long. Would vampire advocacy groups or these cute little pamphlets have changed anything? Or would the Sunday morning cable news services about how all vampires are damned have made things worse? There's no way of knowing. But Dorian wanted to learn more about this himself.
Try as he may to fit in, it's obvious that Dorian is here for something. He flirts with the waitress and casually asks a few questions about vampire activity in the area. He loses a game of pool but presses his competition whenever they bring up 'fangs.' This is the third day in a row he's made some not-so-subtle inquiries about vampires, something's got to give eventually. He's British as hell, the accent is a dead giveaway, so might as well lean into the obviousness and see what happens.
And as he slips out of the back door of the dive bar, stepping outside to light up a cigarette, Dorian's certain that something will happen. What precisely? He doesn't know.

CW: MURDER, SUICIDE, DORIAN'S SHITTY MENTAL HEALTH
Unsurprisingly, there isn't a wiki for this obscureass audio drama series. So, time for me to give a brief canon summary. This is the Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's book The Picture of Dorian Gray, but with an added 'what if he didn't die in the last chapter and instead starred in multiple half hour radio dramas.' One day, in his twenties, Dorian made an idle wish: that he would never age or grow old and a portrait of himself would take on any traces of age instead. The devil heard him and granted his wish, at the expense of Dorian's soul. However, the portrait didn't just take on traces of age: it took on wounds, burns, scars, every trace of sin. The portrait effectively rendered Dorian immortal. Any wound, ranging from a tiny scratch to Dorian literally getting his heart ripped out, got transferred to the portrait. The only way to kill or maim Dorian was to damage the portrait itself.
His early life follows the plot of Picture of Dorian Gray. Dorian met a young woman (Sibyl Vane) who committed suicide when he spurned her affections. He killed one of his closest friends (Basil Hallward) and sunk further and further into depravity as the years went on. But while Oscar Wilde killed off Dorian at the end of Picture, this Dorian survived. The next hundred or so years followed a simple pattern: Dorian moved around a lot, went from place to place, picking up alias to alias, inevitably running into supernatural nonsense along the way. For some reason, the supernatural is drawn to Dorian like a magnet. He's encountered banshees, demons, spirits, werewolves, and other sort of supernatural nasties (this canon doesn't have much overarching plot until season 3, okay). He's also met so many interesting people, both fictional and real world: Dorothy Parker, Sherlock Holmes, Edward Hyde, and Oscar Wilde himself. Dorian's life continues in this monster of the week sort of format until the 1980s.
Then, he meets one of the most important people of Dorian's life: Tobias (Toby) Matthews, a vampire who's practically Dorian's soulmate. The two hit it off right away. However, Toby sinks into a depression and effectively commits suicide via sunlight, with Dorian watching. This plunges Dorian into a decade long depression, which only gets lifted via more portrait shenanigans and Dorian getting to the closest he's died in decades.
The post 2000s Dorian is a lot more subdued and contemplative than his younger self. This Dorian is almost hyper-focused on his sins, his failings, and what a garbage person he is. It gets to the point that in 2012, Dorian himself effectively commits suicide. He stabs his portrait to save the soul of his former governess, who's trapped in Dorian's childhood home and unable to move on. This traps Dorian's consciousness in the portrait, leaving him alone with all of his faults. ...except he doesn't really stay dead. While trapped in the portrait, he makes a deal with Lucifer for an escape route out. Dorian murders three trespassers in his house to gain back his voice, body, and youth. It's shortly after this point that he's brought to Milton.
• Character Personality:
+ ADAPTIVE: The average Confessions of Dorian Gray episode can be summed up as 'Dorian discovers a fun new aspect of the supernatural and tries to survive it attempting to murder him.' Dorian is quick thinking and adaptive, changing well to fit different situations. While he's beholden to a single outcome, he's never beholden to a single way of getting there. If something doesn't work, he's perfectly fine ditching that idea to try something else. Even without taking his immortality into account, he's good at rolling with the punches and making the most out of a terrible situation. Because he's been through so much supernatural nonsense, he's quick to believe someone's claims and quick to figure out how best to survive said supernatural nonsense. Alright, bodyswapping is a thing, what can I do about it. He's a survivor, through and through.
+ CHARMING: Dorian's amazingly good at hiding the garbage fire that is his personality. Part of this is because he's a fairly good liar. But part of this is because he's naturally charming. Dorian's a social butterfly who knows how to handle most situations. He's got experience dealing with people of all sorts of life and, while he can be a little bit superficial, he can push past that and hide his true feelings if needed to get what he wants. He's very good at flattery,sweet-talking, and compliments: Dorian appreciates a quick turn of phrase and can master his way through most conversations. And overall, Dorian's very good at projecting the air of a likeable dude...until the scales drop from people's eyes because Dorian inevitably does something a bit awful.
+ DETERMINED: this is a nice way of saying Dorian's stubborn as shit. When Dorian wants something, he won't stop until he gets it. Whether this means continuing to badger someone, possibly bending the law a little, doing things of dubious legality, or outright murder, Dorian is bound and determined to get what he wants and won't give up until it happens. Thankfully, sometimes what he wants is to stop a rampaging monster or figure out who a serial killer is. Dorian can be too inquisitive for his own good, but due to that determination, he won't leave something half-finished or not investigated. This is partly due to his immortality: since he can't die, Dorian doesn't feel any qualms about pushing forward and keeping going no matter what. But even when he's put in situations without his healing factor or immortality, Dorian is persistently stubborn to achieve his goals. He'll even go above and beyond the call of duty some times: adding in research to find out who a specific person is, asking around and getting gossip about a certain thing, and so on.
— CRUEL: Dorian can be cruel, spiteful, and downright awful. Unless he needs to be charming or kiss ass, he tends to be absolutely horrible and completely condescending to 'uninteresting' or 'dull' people. The only time he's relatively decent to the 'uninteresting' is when they have something he wants, like information or status. And even then, that's fleeting. He doesn't really care about dumping people like yesterday's news if they don't interest him. He's an alcoholic drug-addict who goes from casual fling to casual fling, caring nothing about those he left behind. He doesn't shy away from manipulation, lying, or (on rare occasions) outright murder in order to get what he wants.
— SELF-LOATHING: When you've got all your flaws and sins writ large on a canvas picture of yourself, you become pretty aware of how terrible a person you are. Dorian is way more harsh on himself than other people are on him. He's far more likely to focus on his own flaws and how much of an awful person he is in comparison to others. Despite the fact that Dorian plays up his attractiveness and confidence outside, inwardly he knows that he's an absolutely terrible human being and hyper-fixates on his flaws and all the wrong things he's done. He makes a few attempts to be a decent person every now and then, usually if it reflects someone he cares about. But for the most part, Dorian's content to just wallow in his flaws and accept the fact that he's a monster. It gets to the point that later in canon, his portrait is made sentient (long story) and Dorian knows it's coming after him first: his portrait wants to kill him because he hates himself that much.
— SELF-ABSORBED: On a light note, this asshole makes so many 'Picture of Dorian Gray' jokes about himself. On a heavier note, Dorian is an absolute narcissist. He believes himself to be beautiful, to be enthralling, and to be the most interesting person in the room. In relationships, Dorian always comes first. Often he'll do something that's good for himself but not take into account at ALL the feelings of others in the room. This ties into his cruelty and callous aspects of his personality: he'll abandon someone just because they don't interest him anymore. He assume everyone would be interested in him in some way or another: the biggest way to get Dorian Gray to pay attention to you is dismiss him or ignore him. Sometimes, Dorian's self-absorbed and focused on himself and his own wants to the point of stupidity. Why yes, it's a perfectly smart idea to go show up at the metaphorical doorstep of your ex who watched you die and thinks you're dead just to talk to him and tell him you miss him, what can possibly go wrong. Even after making a mistake, Dorian still focuses on himself and tries to change things so that he gets what he wants.
• Character Skills:
• Mild survival skills. While Dorian's no intrepid explorer, he has spent a bit of time following in the footsteps of doomed expeditions for funsies.
• He can drive a boat! Or at least, he can drive a small yacht.
• Very good singing voice, alright guitar skills.
• Good enough at maths and accounting to work at a bank.
• Decent enough painter.
• Basically this gif. Dorian has picked up a wide array of skills as he's 150+ years old. He is not super good at any of them.
• Character Inventory:
— ITEM ONE: a wool, winter peacoat
— ITEM TWO: the actual picture of Dorian Gray: his cursed portrait. In canon, the portrait and Dorian are tied together. Any sins or wounds he takes heal from him and appear on his portrait. As the game's got a powernerf, the portrait is just an intensely ugly and horrifying looking painting.
— ITEM THREE: a small baggie of cocaine, weighing a few grams. Time for good choices!
• Important Notes: At this point in canon, Dorian does not have a soul. I have no idea if that'll affect anything in-game, I'm just noting it for posterity's sake.

With the arrival of his portrait on board and subsequent death, Dorian hasn't been taking things well. Naturally, this means it's his turn to snap. But because Dorian is a special snowflake, his Nightmare's going to take on a bit of a different form.
Initially, the ship remains the same. But Terrors will find that occasionally when they open a door to a different room, the door opens to a scene from Dorian's life. Might want to ask Dorian about that except surprise, he's not really able to be found at the moment, as he's gotten himself literally lost in nostalgia. There will be more details about the specific locations in the log, but a cliff notes summary of what they might find include:
- Ireland, 1902, a ramshackle, ancient manor house that is slowly sinking into a bog. The house smells like rot, swampwater seeps up from the floor, and a banshee occasionally appears at the top of the staircase. Try not to drown.
- London, 1940, a music hall, destroyed during the Blitz. The sound of air raid sirens blare through the night, but they do nothing to hide the song that plays on the wind...or the ghosts of all the people you've ever hurt that are coming to pay you a visit.
- Whitby, 1986, a costume party. There's lights, drinks, fun, dancing, and a slightly peeved vampire who knows he shouldn't be here. Tobias Matthews, Dorian's dead vampire soulmate, is trapped in his past and not too pleased about it. Jury's out on whether he'll end up helping or snacking on your characters.
- Florida, 2012, a run-down family home sitting on a swamp. On the outside, this house seems normal, but the smell of petrol lingers in the yard. Things inside are different. For a real surprise, check out the master bedroom.
- London, 2014, Dorian's house aka the Mayfair Mansion. The house seems disused as if someone hasn't lived in it for years. There are a few tells that this is Dorian's place: lush furniture, trinkets and knick-knacks from his various travels, and the answering machine message, said in Dorian's own voice...that something is using to warn the visitors of the danger they might be in.
- London, 2014 (again), a torture chamber. The torture chamber is a singular room built on the water's edge. There are plenty of murder weapons inside the torture chamber: rope, guns, lead pipe, poison, etc. During low tide, the room is habitable. But when high tide comes in, the water fills up the room, drowning the inhabitants—a fact that Luke Glass, the sociopath who built this thing and is watching the room via CCTV, will happily inform your character about. What'll happen first: will you kill yourself or let yourself drown?
When characters enter these rooms, they're initially trapped. The door will either vanish or be stuck. It's only after they experience some of the room (and Kates gets to torture them a bit) that the door reappears or opens back up to the Terror. Most of these rooms are dangerous and there are PLENTY of ways for characters to die if you want them to. Feel free to use this post to plot or ask questions!
the Mayfair Mansion
This mansion, located in the UP, has four floors, ten bedrooms with en suites, and a decent sized in ground pool in the spacious backyard. It is fenced in and has all the curb appeal a person could want. But. Every first of the month like clock work, the mansion will miraculously change. The theme, if you will, alters. One month it's gothic. The next it's bright pink and everything inside and out is fluffy, feathered, or covered in glitter. It's hard to tell if it's magic or a very dedicated team that keeps it up. It's just very clear that they don't care what Dorian thinks and are very preoccupied with their own interests - torturing him.

Name: Dorian Gray Door: right Canon: The Confessions of Dorian Gray Canon Point: post series 3, episode 4, "Echoes" Age: over 150 years old, looks to be in his early 20s Appearance: pretty much Alexander Vlahos. Dorian's got grayish blue eyes and curly black hair. He's pale and skinny, looking like he hasn't done a day of manual labor in his life. He's got a British accent. A relatively cushy childhood plus getting immortality in his early 20s means that Dorian doesn't really have the sort of scars that one would get in their lives. History: Unsurprisingly, there isn't a wiki for this obscureass audio drama series. So, time for me to give a brief canon summary. This is the Dorian Gray from Oscar Wilde's book The Picture of Dorian Gray, but with an added 'what if he didn't die in the last chapter and instead starred in multiple half hour radio dramas.' Something (it's totally Satan) heard him and granted his wish, at the expense of Dorian's soul. He killed one of his closest friends (Basil Hallward) and blackmailed a former lover (Alan Campbell) to dispose of the body. He sunk further and further into depravity as the years went on. But while Oscar Wilde killed off Dorian at the end of Picture, this Dorian survived. The next hundred or so years followed a simple pattern: Dorian moved around a lot, went from place to place, picking up alias to alias, inevitably running into supernatural nonsense along the way. Dorian murders three trespassers in his house to gain back his voice, body, and youth. With his new lease on life, he's not as depressed as before, though he is more hyper-aware of his flaws and that self-loathing's kicking up a notch. He's getting pulled to Duplicity about a month or so after that, as a newly revived Dorian deals with 2014, a serial killing stalker, and the fact that he's attracted the attention of the Lowell Foundation, an organization (ostensibly) designed to explore the supernatural. Personality: + ADAPTIVE: The average Confessions of Dorian Gray episode can be summed up as 'Dorian discovers a fun new aspect of the supernatural and tries to survive it attempting to murder him.' Unless he needs to be charming or kiss ass, he tends to be absolutely horrible to 'uninteresting' or 'dull' people. Dorian's a complete ass to a security guard attempting to befriend him and is routinely condescending to police officers. The only time he's relatively decent to the 'uninteresting' is when they have something he wants, like information or status. And even then, that's fleeting. He doesn't really care about dumping people like yesterday's news if they don't interest him. He goes from casual fling to casual fling, caring little about those he left behind. It gets to the point that later in canon, his portrait is made sentient (long story) and Dorian knows it's coming after him first: his portrait wants to kill him because he hates himself that much. - HEDONISM: Dorian does what he wants, damn the consequences and damn what people think. This manifests in sooo many ways, such as Dorian wanting to look his best and taking whatever sort of drugs, sex, and alcohol he can get. He doesn't mind sinking himself into sin and debauchery as 1: he likes it and 2: for most of his life, his portrait took on his sins. He's spent most of his life reliant on his immortality, so he's perfectly fine doing dangerous things just for the thrill of it. He puts a lot of focus on the pleasures of life, taking physical pleasure whenever he can, at the expense of other people and deeper emotional relationships. This hedonism also manifests in an appreciation of beauty. Dorian focuses on the beauty in things and wants to surround himself with it: beautiful clothes, beautiful art, beautiful people, etc. - SELF-ABSORBED. Dorian is an absolute narcissist. Dorian believes he's inevitably the most interesting person in the room and is routinely annoyed whenever people treat him as nothing special or forget his existence. It gets to the point where Dorian actively seeks out people who deem him boring or not interesting (his eventual boyfriend Toby) to try and prove them wrong. On a lighter self-absorbed note, this asshole makes so many Picture of Dorian Gray jokes about himself. He's got a copy of the book The Picture of Dorian Gray (which in this universe, Oscar Wilde published as fiction), when he's in a band it's called Dorian Gray and the Hedonists, he regularly quotes Oscar Wilde at people, he convinces one of his flings to read him a passage from Picture of Dorian Gray, if there is some way that Dorian can reference Picture, Oscar Wilde, or his legacy in some way/shape/form, he's straight up going to. Powers and Abilities: ABSOLUTELY BONKERS IMMORTALITY: Dorian has some absolute bonkers immortality. The big condition is that said bonkers immortality is tied to a portrait of himself. Every wound that Dorian takes heals up from himself and is transferred onto his portrait. Likewise, any trace of age or 'sin' is transferred to the portrait as well. Dorian's life and physical appearance is tied directly to his portrait. If the portrait were to be branded, then a brand would show up on Dorian's skin. If the portrait were to be destroyed, then it would kill Dorian. When the portrait is destroyed, it reverts back to it's pre-cursed self and all traces of age, sin, wounds, etc. are transferred onto Dorian (which basically means that if someone stabs the portrait, they'll be left with a remarkably pretty picture of Dorian and the world's worst corpse.) Said bonkers immortality also comes with a pretty sweet healing factor. Dorian has a stupidly over-powered healing factor because CODG is an audio drama and they can take advantage of things like that. In canon, he's healed from stab wounds, defenestration, mustard gas, drowning, car accidents, torture, blood loss, electrocution, being set on fire a LOT, and that one time his literal heart got ripped out of his chest. When he's hurt or when he dies, Dorian heals up seconds later. He still feels pain from injuries, they just cannot kill him. SOULLESS: Dorian Gray has no soul. He sold it in exchange for eternal youth. This doesn't really have any effect on his day to day life, but someone who can sense souls or anything like that would easily be able to see it's absence. Inventory: The clothes on his back, his portrait, a hilariously 2014 cellphone. Samples: sample 1 & sample 2 |

RIGHT, CONFESSIONS OF DORIAN GRAY PRIMER: it is bonkers in the best way possible. CODG is an audio series, done by Big Finish (an audiobook company best known for SO MANY DOCTOR WHO AUDIOS like they are just bleeding Doctor Who audios.) If I had to peg a genre, I'd peg it as horror, but each episode ranges in tone. It's also horror all over the place. Some are supernatural horror, some are more fantasy horror, some are straight up Saw style body horror, so again, all over the place. It's got five seasons. Season 1 & 2 consist of stand-alone stories that are basically "Dorian narrates about something that happened in the past & we grab a guest actor from Big Finish's massive roster of actors they work with." Each of those episodes is a bit under half an hour, except the three bonus specials which are an hour to two hours. Season 3 was released as one big chunk and has a continuous story arc of "Dorian in the present, sans narration so you can see what a truly massive cock he is." Season 4 went back to stand-alone stories of s1 & s2, but the two-part Christmas special was more of Dorian & Toby in the present. Season 5 is four hour long stories, some set in the past, one set in the present, three with other people narrating about Dorian, one sans narration.
the range is pretty self-contained which is grand because some canons totally AREN'T (comics......). Dorian shows up in the Dark Shadows audios once (for five seconds) and actually got his start in the Benny Summerfield range (in the most BLATANT backdoor pilot ever), but both of those are skippable/only barely referenced in the main range. Worlds of Big Finish is a massive multirange crossover of some of Big Finish's properties and is very lovely, but also kind of skippable.
these are all pretty cheap. Individual episodes in seasons 1 & 2 are $3 USD each (cheaper than a Starbucks!). Season 3 and Season 4 were released as one big package consisting of eight thirty minute episodes and is $20 download (the cost of a really nice meal) and approx $40 on cd (which seems like a lot but it's like four hours worth of material so if you pace out and do the math, the math makes sense). The 2015 Christmas special is $13 download, $22 cd.
here are links:
- sound cloud link which includes trailers of everything plus the first ten minutes of each of the s1 episodes (which is about half an episode)
- link to the main range of Big Finish
- here are two Youtube videos about the recording of season three. Everybody involved is super precious and downright adorable.
- Big Finish released two free(!!!) small little seasonal 7minute Dorian Gray audios, one during December 2014 and one just last October. you do need an account to download these, but since they're free, I can totally upload them to mediafire and shoot you the links if you want in the hopes that you'll make an account and buy this yourself anyway.
- Big Finish also released one free episode The Enigma of Dorian Gray, which is one of the s4 stories. Again, shoot me a line.
- a lovely little interview with Alex Vlahos about Confessions. approx 45 minutes long, entirely adorable.
Big Finish is a very small company and they're all very lovely people (I met some of the company people when I was in the UK, they have a little one day convention, they're all so lovely and we talked about crisps) so unlike some of the bigass canons out there where I will conveniently point you towards a pirate link, I highly recommend buying the audios if you're interested. cause like, just buying one of the season 1 or 2 episodes costs less than a Starbucks and you've got around thirty minutes of wonderful narrative to listen to on the commute.
also, the series can get KIND OF VIOLENT at times and there is SEXY TIMES WITH SEXY NOISES, so don't listen around kids. if there's anything big that wigs you out or triggers you, just tell me and I'll say "yeah, you should skip this one" or "nah, that doesn't show up, you're good." off the top of my head there's a really gross bit involving eyes, one episode that highly features cocaine, body horror: the episode, and two episodes that are just chock full of dubious consent (one of which briefly features sexual assault). So yeah, some episodes are kind of triggery. on the other hand, it's got canonical bodyswapping, a band episode, vampires playing playstations, and literal demons in the wallpaper so yeah, check it out.
I HAVE RAMBLED ON TOO, TOO MUCH but if you want any recommendations/want me to tell you more about this, just tell me "yo, this episode looks chill, what do you think about it?".
